Climbing villages up closeExperience the special!
Feeling nature and experiencing adventure – whoever visits the Maltatal in Upper Carinthia is sure to do so. At the eastern gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park, visitors will find a unique cultural and natural landscape that is unparalleled in winter and summer. Large areas of the municipal territory (262 km²) are part of the core or outer zone of the national park, which guarantees nature experiences of the original kind: Hiking, climbing, cycling, alpine tours to one of the surrounding three thousand meter peaks (Hochalmspitze, Ankogel, Schneewinkelspitze, Oberlercherspitze or Hafner), and in winter ski tours and ice climbing make the mountaineer’s heart beat faster.
The name of the “valley of falling waters”, as the writer Dr. Gustav Renker, inspired by the numerous waterfalls in the valley, takes its name from the Celtic-Romanic Malontina and means stone region, mountain region. But that doesn’t make it uncomfortable: many small inns, guesthouses, huts, farm holidays and cosy hotels combine regionalism and sustainability with Carinthian cosiness. Malta is an insider tip for a holiday in Carinthia.
